I honestly haven't used my Rings in a long time. The sound was feeling a little played out and I usually opted for Elements instead. But then I saw @RedMeansRecording post about Rings' alt FM synth mode. I knew about this mode, but never paid any attention to it, because I never realized that it maintained the polyphony that Rings is known for it. But lo and behold... it's the tiny polyphonic eurorack synth that I always wish I'd had!
I can't state enough how cool this mode is. If you've spent more than 30 seconds with Rings, it should be totally intuitive. Just go to the green mode and hold down the mode button until the green LED starts pulsing. That's it. For the most pleasant sounds, keep Structure at max or min - one is more saw-y and one is more bell-y.
Patch notes:
- Rings in poly mode, sequenced by Ableton. Put through Qu-bit Data Bender and Strymon Magneto, with QPAS in the chain to tame the higher harmonics.
- Elements playing a countermelody every now and then, also sequenced by Ableton.
- Moog Matriarch for some background chords. I programmed a few chords into the sequencer, set it to random playback, and triggered it via Meadowphysics on the Monome Ansible.
- Some WMD percussion also sequenced by Meadowphysics.
- Elektron Machinedrum on the beat.
- Novation Summit on the bassline.
